Heart surgery is performed at UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, ranked one of the Top 50 Heart Hospitals in the U.S. and an accredited Chest Pain Center.
Pre- and postoperative care is provided by cardiologists from Cedar Valley Cardiovascular Center, a division of Cedar Valley Medical Specialists, the most comprehensive specialty group serving the Cedar Valley.

Since 1982, UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital has been providing the Cedar Valley and surrounding communities with the ability to have their cardiac surgery performed close to home. This allows families to be close to their loved ones during this stressful time.
Allen Hospital was ranked one of the 2014 Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals in the United States by Truven Analytics. Allen, along with Cedar Valley Medical Specialists fellowship-trained and board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon and his dedicated heart team, performs approximately 160 open heart surgeries each year. Cardiothoracic surgery includes services such as coronary artery revascularization, aortic value replacements, and mitral value repair/replacement.
Allen Hospital’s cardiovascular team also partners with Gundersen Health to provide continuous care. With the help of Gundersen, Allen Hospital is able to offer minimally invasive surgeries such as mitral value repairs/replacements and coronary revascularization. Allen Hospital continues to provide ideal patient care for the Cedar Valley and its surrounding communities with the goal of providing the best outcome for every patient every time.
Venki Paramesh, MD, has been a heart surgeon with Gundersen Health System’s comprehensive Heart & Vascular Institute in La Crosse, Wis., since 2001. A versatile surgeon, Dr. Paramesh performs adult cardiac procedures such as open heart coronary artery bypass and heart valve repair/replacement, surgery for atrial fibrillation, aortic surgery and transmyocardial revascularization.He was pivotal in the heart transplant program at the University of Arizona prior to joining Gundersen.
His continued interest in surgical management of heart failure has made him the driving force behind our LVAD (left ventricular assist device) program. An implanted LVAD helps pump blood for a patient with a weakened heart while waiting for a heart transplant or for the heart to recover, or as a permanent solution. Other interests include complex aortic surgery including endovascular and hybrid approaches for aortic disease. Dr. Paramesh also performs a variety of thoracic or chest wall surgeries.
Dr. Paramesh earned his medical degree from the University of Kansas. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Wichita and his cardiothoracic surgery residency at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Prior to his work at Gundersen, Dr. Paramesh practiced in the Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Arizona College of Medicine including serving as division chief of the Southern Arizona V.A. Medical Center.
Prem Rabindranauth, MD, FACS, also known to his patients and colleagues as Dr. Rabindra, has been a cardiothoracic surgeon at the La Crosse, Wis.-based Gundersen Health System since 2002. Always working on the cutting edge in his field, Dr. Rabindra was one of the first in region to learn and perform minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting (MICS-CABG).
Since 2010, he has successfully performed hundreds of minimally invasive procedures. He now teaches and lectures on the technique. Dr. Rabindra has been featured widely in the local media and has presented nationally and internationally on the benefits of this minimally invasive surgical procedure.
Dr. Rabindra has earned the respect of his colleagues not only as a surgeon but as the medical chair for the department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Gundersen. He is board certified in general and thoracic surgery; a fellow of the American College of Surgeons; and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Society for Heart Valve Disease and International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Before coming to Gundersen, Dr. Rabindra completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, N.J., where he also completed his general surgery residency. He earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa.
His main focus is on achieving better patient outcomes using minimally invasive procedures including multi-vessel MICS-CABG and valve repair and replacement. He is also proficient in off-pump coronary bypass, complex aortic surgery including endovascular and hybrid approaches, video-assisted thorascopic surgery and ablation for atrial fibrillation.
Sajjad Rizvi, MD, is the newest member of Gundersen Health System’s cardiothoracic surgery team. Before coming to Gundersen, Dr. Rizvi honed his cardiothoracic surgical skills at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center of Boston, a Harvard affiliate.
Dr. Rizvi earned his medical degree from Aga Khan University Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan. In the United States, he completed his general surgery residency at the West Virginia University in Morgantown and his thoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
